Hello,
I wear glasses. I was wondering whether the IDF will provide me with military purpose glasses, i.e. glasses that are robust and will fit under a gas mask?
Thanks. |

I have never heard of the IDF supplying anyone with special glasses. _________________ Mahal Nahal March '04 draft |

| Thanks Dan. That is what I thought. The reason I asked is because in the Swedish military, enlisted soldiers who wear glasses are sent to an optician where they are given glasses with a robust frame that will fit under a gas mask. |

I did want to make a clarification on Dan's answer.
While the army will not "upgrade" your glasses, there are certain circumstances where they will get a soldier glasses if needed.
If you are a Hayal Boded or Lone soldier, and during your service you develope a need for glasses, the army will get them for you. Also, certain soldiers who come from needy families might also qualify for free glasses.
If I recall, the glasses are shatterproof as are the frames.
They are notoriously ugly, by the way. _________________ Our home page is at: http://www.mahal-idf-volunteers.org/ |

I have to correct you there rafi, the IDF provides every soldier who needs glasses with 300 Shekel, which can be used in the big optician stores. Of course for 300Shekels you won't get the prettiest glasses
For the gas masks, we've been told that in case we will really need them, each soldier that needs glasses will get individual lenses for the gas masks themselves. |

| How do you get the 300 shekels for glasses? Is this done after you enlist or can it be done before? I wear contacts but they are too expensive, so I want a pair of glasses for the army; but I don't want to pay for a new pair and then realize the army won't reimburse me. |

This already a bit ago, but you definitely can't get the glasses before you enlist.
Once you're in the army they give you a coupon which you can use at certain opticians.
Took them forever though... |

Thank you for correcting me!
This is something that has changed.
Any time this happens, please jump in. It's been a long time since I was a Hayal Boded (lone soldier) in sadir. _________________ Our home page is at: http://www.mahal-idf-volunteers.org/ |

Could I get packs from family during my service? My contacts are free here in Hungary, and actually it is much more comfortable than glasses, I don't want to wear glasses again. |
